Aerospace
Engineering - As a Career
The specialisations in Aerospace Industry includes,
areas like structural design, navigational guidance and control systems, instrumentation
and communication or production methods or it can be in a particular product such
as military aircrafts, passenger planes, helicopters, satellites, rockets etc.
Aerospace professionals apply their knowledge to design better aircraft, send a spacecraft to Mars, or design a satellite to predict the weather. The same aerospace professionals may also apply their knowledge to study wind stress on new buildings; to eliminate energy waste in skyscrapers; to design automobiles, high-speed trains and ships; or to aid in artificial heart research. The future of aerospace engineering is as exciting and challenging as its history.
The Indian Aerospace professionals find a very good demand in airlines, aircraft manufacturing units, air turbine production plants or design development programmes for the aviation industry.
Various
Career Opportunities
The job market for Indian aerospace engineering graduates
has improved significantly in recent years along with the growth in the local
as well as international aerospace industry. In addition, these aerospace engineering
graduates are well qualified for employment in a variety of related fields. They
may be employed in a number of different job functions, including :
Research
and Development
The discovery of new methods of analysis, products, and
processes.
Design
The determination of the structure, arrangement and function of the components
of a system or the system itself.
Test
The
testing of the performance of new products in conjunction with research, design,
and development.
Manufacturing
The building and assembling of products to meet rigid specifications.
Customer Relations The interaction with buyers of the product.
Management
Many engineers eventually go into engineering management, some into general
management.
The
Job Demands
As Aerospace engineering involves design and manufacture
of very high technology systems, the job requires manual, technical as well as
mechanical aptitude. The engineers usually work in teams under the supervision
of senior engineers, bringing together their skills and technical expertise. Though
highly paid, the work is very demanding.
The
Must Have's
An eye for detail and good problem-solving skills.
Mathematical
precision, design skills & computer skills
Good Communication Skills,
planning ability and a knack for working under pressure.
Physical fitness
& ability to work at great speed especially in checking and maintenance of
aircrafts during turnarounds.
A normal color vision.
Eligibility
To be an aerospace engineer one should have a graduate degree (B.E/B.Tech.)
or at least a Diploma in Aerospace. The degree and postgraduate degree courses
are offered by the Engineering colleges and Institutes of Technology (IITs), and
the diploma courses are available at polytechnics.
The International Aerospace Industry employs, over a million, of people overseas and generates huge turnover. With the highest proportion of qualified employees in professional, technical, and skilled manual roles, Aerospace continues to attract Indian Engineers, who possess the greatest potential and 'knowledge base' to meet future business challenges.
